In my opinion cross-platform development environments are solving this issue. If you are able to write one application that runs on all the underlying platforms you don't have to worry about which device is most popular.

"Symbian is dead" - this is the statement I've been hearing too often lately. There must be something to it.

And there\\\'s more... The point you touch on about your friend being able to pick up the Android SDK and just get on with it is also a critical consideration. As well as having a route to market, developers need a good platform offering to build on. Symbian has 10 years to improve the developer offering and has failed to do so. Documentation and support for Android and iPhone already surpasses the offerings surrounding Symbian. Symbian OS isn\\\'t dead, but it\\\'s time as the #1 mobile OS is already over as far as independent developers are concerned. It won\\\'t be another decade before it\\\'s no longer the #1 OS in smartphones.
